SURFACE Z90

General description:
SURFACE Z90 is the highest-grade epoxy resin Onyx offer for hard top glossy surface finishes. It can be used as a clear coating or mixed with various types of colour pigments (e.g. metallic, pearlescent, solid colour powders, etc.), toners and dyes. It has a very good self-levelling characteristic with zero corrugation, excellent hardness and good scratch resistant.

Best usage:
SURFACE Z90 is best used for the following:
Restaurant, Hotel or Condominium *Geode Wall Arts *Countertops, *Tabletops, 3D Sticker Laminate, Lavatory, Clear Top Coat, etc.

Packaging:
SURFACE Z90 Epoxy Resin is a two component epoxy resin with a 3:1 ratio (refer to 'How to use this product?' below for more information).
A 1kg Packaging is equivalent to a total of a 1kg mixture of Part A and Part B, also a 4kgs Packaging is equivalent to a total of a 4kgs mixture of Part A and Part B and so on.

How to use this product?
1. Surface preparation for concrete(old and new):
The concrete surface must be smooth, dry and clean. These can be accomplished by doing the following:
Newly constructed flooring or countertops are easier to clean. A hand grinder can be used to remove dried concrete debris left on the counter or flooring or even grind some uneven areas.
Sweep thoroughly the working area and it is recommended to use a vacuum cleaner to clean up the concrete dust.
For old concretes, removal of dirt, oil and loosed concretes must be accomplished first to expose the clean concrete part. This can be done also using a hand grinder.
Cracks shall be v-cut and enlarged at the cracked line using a power grinder. This will ease the application of concrete epoxy putty later. A cement mortar can also be used.
Carefully apply concrete epoxy putty or cement mortar along the crack line and wait until it is fully cured.
After sealing of cracks, grind the concrete substrate and clean again by sweeping and vacuum cleaning then application of epoxy primer may begin.
If the concrete requires large chipping, this could be accomplished using a mini electric jackhammer or a combination of hand grinder and ball peen hammer will also work for smaller chipping requirements.
Finally sure the substrate is free of dirt and oil and also the newly patched concrete must be fully cured, smooth and dry.

2. Mixture:

SURFACE Z90 is a two-component epoxy resin with a ratio of 3:1.
  • Determine first the desired amount of the mixture (example you need a 4kgs epoxy resin for your project)
  • Use clean and dry containers and a weighing scale to exactly measure Part A and Part B. Pour each of them on a separate container following the proper ratios
  • A simple equation for this mixture is 3(Part A) + 1(Part B) = desired amount of the Total Resin (from our example, 3kgs Part A + 1kg Part B = 4kgs epoxy mixture).
  • Always remember that Part A is three times (3x) the amount of Part B, that is why its ratio is 3:1.
  • To simply understand this, in every 1 Part B, always add 3 Part of A. Another example, for a 400g of Part B always add the trice or three times(3x) of it, in this case, 400g x 3 is 1200g, therefore add 1200g Part A, then the total mixture will be 1200g Part A + 400g Part B = 1600g Total Resin mixture or 1.6kgs.
  • Mix well using a machine driven stirrers for 3 to 5 minutes especially for large projects and whenever mixing with colour pigments.
  • Colour pigments are recommended to be mixed with Part A first. Mechanically stir for about 10-15minutes before mixing Part B to save pot life.
  • A maximum of 4% colour pigment shall be the limit of each total mixture of Part A and Part B. For example, a 4kgs pack resin has a 4% of 0.16kgs, therefore use 0.16kgs or 160grams colour pigments, a 1kg pack has a 4% of 0.04kgs, therefore use 40grams colour pigments.
  • Do not mix more than 10kgs of epoxy per batch.

  • 3. Degassing or removing the bubbles (optional):
Most epoxies are degassed before application especially for mould casting to avoid bubbles within the product. In this case, a large project like floors most of the time won't be needing a degassing due to the open workable surface for an applicator to pop the bubbles but continuously spreading the resin and combining with using a heat gun or a plumbers torch. Kindly read "Special notes for a long term and best quality result no. 7" for more detail recommendation.

    4. System application:
This is the ideal application system that may give the best quality result for any kind of surface project. Different kind of application method may still be applied depending on the desire and good practice of the applicator, user and/or contractor.

    Primer:
SURFACE Z90 itself can be used as the primer. A coverage of 0.15kgs/sq.m to 0.3kgs/sqm is recommended but may still vary depending on your desired amount of application. This method will give your project the best quality result. Just use a roller or brush to spread and seal the concrete substrate. A white, grey or black colour pigment can be mixed with the resin for better priming colour. When cured, this epoxy primer can be sanded using 100grits sanding paper before the next coat. This is best applicable for surface protection on countertops, tables and smaller areas compared with a flooring project. For general flooring, parking, garage or warehouse, a thin layer of epoxy spread using a brush is enough without needing a sanding work for the next coat.

    Mid Coat:
SURFACE Z90 is also the mid coat. This is the part where you do your artistic designs. Before pouring the mid coat, make sure you only mixed a maximum of 4% colour pigments per mixture(refer to no.2) so that it may not compromise the quality of the epoxy. Pour only when the primer is dry or tacky dry. A coverage of 0.6kgs/sq.m to 0.8kgs/sq.m is recommended during this stage. Spread evenly and repeatedly using a trowel, roller or brush. The aesthetic appearance of your project depends on this part of the application. For countertops and table projects, a heat gun can be used to pop the bubbles at the surface or even plumbers torch but not recommended due to the risk of explosion especially when the user is not a qualified plumber.

    Top Coat:
To further protect the final surface of the project, apply another layer of clear SURFACE Z90 for general flooring or tables and best to use a clear SHIELD TZ140 for countertops instead. For tables and countertops, it is optional to sand the mid coat using 120grits sandpaper before pouring the clear final coating, then pop the bubbles using a heat gun. A coverage of 0.4kgs/sq.m to 0.6kgs/sq.m is recommended for the final coating of the flooring projects or smaller projects like tables and countertops.

    Transparent masking:
If the desired result is clear or transparent, a primer and a mid coat without any pigment could do the job since SURFACE Z90 is crystal clear when dried. The applicator can adjust the desired coverage while the same principle and application practice should apply.

    Special Features:

Aside from a Shore D hardness of 90, Onyx' SURFACE Z90 also features its good levelling properties - thanks to its low viscosity that made this possible, high strength with natural defoaming and can be cured under room temperature or can be heated for faster curing time. It is also moisture proof making it best for masking and potting electronic components. When cured, SURFACE Z90 is transparent and shines like a clear crystal with no corrugation since it also has a very good air release.

All Onyx' Epoxy Resins "Z" Series (including CASTING Z85 & SHIELD TZ140) is made from non-toxic and tasteless raw materials imported from Germany and Japan, thus producing a very stable none volatile resin with zero fumes that are safe for home use. The Median Lethal Dose or LD50 value of Onyx Epoxy Resins is >3000 mg/kg which is the same LD50 value of tease spoon of salt or sodium chloride. Note: Although SURFACE Z90 is a safe product, it is still an industrial product, not food and therefore, should never be swallowed. In case this happens, immediately go to the hospital for medical attention.

How hard really is SURFACE Z90?
It belongs to the "Z" series in Onyx epoxy resin family which carries the hardest Shore D value of "90". To put this into a real perspective, a "hard hat", the one engineers wear in mining and construction sites, normally have a Shore D value of 85 to keep them safe from falling heavy objects.

*Special notes for a long term and best quality result:
    1. Make sure that the substrate is clean and dry. Users may follow the recommended surface preparation below.
    2. For long term quality and other attributes such as transparency and gloss effect, this product is recommended (but not limited) for indoor applications. Use SHIELD TZ140 for best UV protection if needed.
    3. Mix only with compatible pigment powder, dyes, toners, etc. for the best aesthetic and quality result.
    4. Use only after 7 days curing period especially for heavy traffic service (e.g. parking, garage, etc.)
    5. The maximum temperature this cured epoxy can handle is up to 80 deg.C, beyond may lead to distortion. If high heat protection is required, use SHIELD TZ140. It also belongs to the "Z" family. It is almost the same with SURFACE Z90, both have a Shore D of 90 but SHIELD TZ140 can handle heat up to 140 deg.C.
    6. Not recommended for mould pouring or casting. Use CASTING Z85 instead.
    7. To prevent and/or minimized the bubbles trap within the poured epoxy, make sure to spread the epoxy continuously within the working area. It is also recommended (but optional) to use a vacuum chamber to degas the epoxy mixture before pouring them (just take note of the working time) or use a heat gun around the surface of the poured epoxy to pop the bubbles. Plumbers torch can also be used since all of Onyx Epoxy Resins are safe and not flammable, but it still not recommended due to the risk of fire and explosion of the torch itself especially when the user is not a qualified plumber.
    8. Make sure that the Relative Humidity (RH) of the working space is less than 85%. Any coating including epoxies may accumulate moisture at the surface that may lead to white mist, uneven cured resin and worst delamination of the epoxy when cured.
    9. Always refer to the Technical Data Sheet before using this product. You can download them here.

    Safety Precautions:

Onyx Epoxy Resins are safe for home use and are none volatile, but strict safe work practices are still required.
    1. Skin irritation varies from person to person, that is why when working with epoxy resins, always wear protective equipment like gloves, apron, shoe cover rugs, spiked booties or even a disposable coverall to avoid direct skin contact especially when mixing, pouring and spreading on a large work. In case skin contact happens, immediately rub with a clean towel or paper then thoroughly wash with water and soap. Do not clean your skin with cleaning solvents like thinners, acetone, mineral spirits, etc. since these chemicals can penetrate your bare skin.
    2. Work in a very well ventilated space and always wear a mask. For poor ventilation and tight working areas, a respirator is required to reduce and/or even eliminate any health risks. Some will smell the resin, some don't. Most people identify the smell as the fumes but they're not the same. Onyx Epoxies are very stable during the reaction and no VOC or fumes is vaporized during the reaction, but continuous, repeated and long term exposure still may cause irritation to the respiratory tract.
    3. Use protective goggles or even a face shield to keep your eyes safe especially during sanding and even from accidental contact of the epoxy resin with your eyes. Epoxy can cause eye irritation and swelling. In case this happens, don't rub instead continuously wash with running water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately.
    4. Do not swallow this product. Immediately seek medical attention if this happens.
    5. Test first this product with a small amount of mixture to minimize mistakes during the actual work.
    6. Keep out of reach of children.

    Storage and shelf life:
    1. Store in a clean and dry place best with a temperature between 8-25deg.C.
    2. Keep away from high humidity, hot environment and direct sunlight.
    3. Recommend to consume after opening to keep the quality.
    4. Shelf life is 12 months at 70% RH and 25 deg.C.
